Growing up I always said that someday I would love to own a cabin. Back in the early 1990’s I purchased the 90-acre tract of land where the cabin now sits. At the time it was cutover timberland that I reseeded in pines. There was an old house site on the property with two chimneys standing. I was looking around one day and thought, “This is where I want to build a cabin.”
I own a bulldozer so I started to clear a cabin site. I spoke with a man from Red Oak, VA (lower southern Charlotte County) who said he had a tobacco barn with hewed pine logs for sale. I purchased the barn, took it down, brought it to my property, and started the work in early 2000. After working off and on for about one year it had a roof on and had dried in.
My wife Gwen and I were married in 2001 and after doing some work on our home on the farm where we live today, I went back to the cabin to finish what I had started two years before. It was a lot of hard work, especially cleaning and treating the logs.
The rocks used have a lot of family history; some of them came from the home of my great grandfather on my dad’s side of family and some of them came from the home of my great grandmother on my mom’s side of the family.
The cabin has been something special for Gwen and I. We love to entertain friends there and we also enjoy renting it out and meeting so many wonderful people.
We hope to see you at the cabin some day!
